Year I HL IB Work- Mia S.
The central idea of my concentration revolves around the question, “How does sexuality present itself in lore, symbolism, and mythology?”. Through my pieces I aim to present stories and characters that convey ideas of sexuality.
In many of my pieces I begin with portraits of characters from myths and lore. For example, in my 3rd concentration I depicted the Greek Mythological character, Echidna. Echidna is a snake nymph that uses her beauty to lure in men. I found that myths of Echidna perfectly presented sexuality and I wanted to reinvent the character. Other than characters, I’ve utilized symbols and colors to convey sexuality. In the majority of my pieces there are animal horns and red thread. Both symbolize lust, passion and allow me convey ideas of sexuality. Another example is in my 5th concentration, The Death of Pan. In this piece, I depicted a nude woman with golden horns mourning. Pan is a very famous Greek god, known for his musical abilities and erotic nature. Because of the stories behind the characters in Greek Mythology, I am able to easily incorporate sexuality into the pieces.
If I’m not utilizing myths or lore, I rely on symbolism. For example, in my 8th concentration, Video Girl, I rely on color and symbols. I pieced together a collage of neon tinted photographs of a woman’s skin and a ram skull. I felt that this concentration diverged from my typical piece, which was refreshing.
