Julia P. Concentration
The central idea of my concentration revolves around social issues in America. I wanted to research the struggles of others on a nationwide scale and present them as art pieces to raise awareness about these issues. I hope to create an emotional reaction that raises questions in the viewer’s mind.
At the start of my concentration, I wanted to focus on presenting different social issues through portraits to evoke emotion, which can be seen in Images 1, 2, and 3, representing the social issues of drug abuse, self confidence and repression, respectively. After these three pieces, I wanted to create larger scale paintings with more perspective, to show the larger scale impact of these issues, which can be seen in Images 4, 5, and 6. Around the same time, I also started to explore more of the mark making aspect of drawing and created several cartoon drawings, which can be seen in Images 7, 8, 9, and 10. Many social issues are brought to attention through comics so I wanted to imitate this style. Near the end of my concentration, I wanted to create more symbolic art pieces. Image 11 represents the social issue of disillusionment with life, and more specifically, the way policy decisions marginalize some populations, preventing citizens from reaching their full potential. Image 12 represents people with psychological illnesses that aren’t being treated with enough seriousness. The specific illness I painted to represent is Depersonalization Disorder. A major symptom of this is feeling detached from one’s surroundings, mental processes or body, which is why the man on the couch is faceless and bodiless.
